Common Cat Skin Problems

Dec 16, 2021

When you see your cat start to incessantly scratch, lick or rub itself, you know that something is wrong. Abnormal scratching in cats is typically the result of skin problems. As a fur parent, it is important for you to know the different skin problems your cat may encounter so you are more prepared to address it.

Mites
Mites cause a skin disease called mange, which is caused by too much scratching. Mange causes swelling and hair loss in the face, eyelids, neck and back. This can make your cat itch like crazy, and cause excessive scratching that results in redness and even wounds which can be painful and uncomfortable. To treat mites, topical treatments are applied on the skin for relief. Beddings and personal items must be cleaned to eliminate mites. Exposure to other pets must also be limited to prevent it from spreading.

Similar to mites, bites from ticks and fleas can cause excessive scratching that can lead to redness, sores and even hair loss. Preventative treatments such as regularly changing bedding and cleaning of areas your cat frequents helps to keep these pests away.

Allergies
Cats can also develop allergies to things around them. Like you, they can develop allergies to food, chemicals or even dust, dirt or pollen. Observe your pet when it starts to scratch excessively and check there is a pattern to when it happens. Does it happen at a particular time of the day or at a specific place? This can help you identify if your cat has an allergic reaction to something around her. If you find that this is so, bring her to the vet so that she can be closely examined and be given the proper treatment for the allergies.

Stress-related Hair Loss
Hair loss is another problem among cats, which can be caused by stress. Yes, your cat can also get stressed from various sources – the environment, changes in routines or conflict with other pets.  Stress in cats can trigger hair loss and changes in their normal behaviour. Find out what is causing the stress and make slow gradual changes until your cat’s behaviour returns to normal.

Acne and Blackheads
Believe it or not, cats can get acne and blackheads too. They usually form on the chin or under the lips and can become swollen and irritated, causing your cat to scratch excessively. Acne can be caused by allergic reactions or bacterial infections. It is best to bring your cat to the vet so that she can be properly checked.

Sometimes, the cuts and grazes on your cat become infected and develop into abscesses that are swollen and filled with pus. These can be uncomfortable and painful for your cat. It is important to keep the swollen areas clean to reduce the swelling and infection. Check with your vet for possible medications to relieve your cat of the pain and discomfort.
