Common Cat Litter Box Problems & How To Solve Them

Nov 12, 2021

Do you remember the first time you brought your cat into your house and started training her to use the litter box? You may have encountered some mishaps along the way — such as finding urine on the floor or feces on the carpet, potted plants and even sheets.

After some time, your cat gets used to her litter box and your problem is solved! But what if for some strange reason, you encounter problems with the litter box again? What do you think you should do?

When your cat refuses to use the litter box.
Most cats like clean litter boxes and one reason why she may not use it is because your cat finds it smelly and dirty. Cleaning the box on a daily basis helps keep it a pleasant space for you and your kitty, and even prevents any potential health issues in the long run. Remember to rinse it well at least once a week!

When your cat prefers certain locations to do its business.
If your cat pees and poops out of the litter box and wherever it pleases, you need to make the preferred area less appealing to your cat. For example, if your cat might prefer to do its business in a dark corner of the home, make it brighter to discourage it from going there.

At the same time, you can also make surfaces uncomfortable for your cat so that it will look for another place to do its business. When this happens, place extra litter boxes in suitable places to improve your chances of finding a new litter box location your cat prefers.

When your cat finds it difficult to use the litter box.
Make sure that your cat has easy access to her litter box and can fit comfortably inside. If your cat finds the litter box too cramped or too small, she might refuse to use it. Older cats in particular must be able to get into the litter box without much difficulty. Avoid covers and place litter boxes close to the ground so your cat can use it effortlessly.

When your cat has developed a negative association with its litter box.
Your cat may have had a previous unpleasant experience while using the litter box, which can cause her to be hesitant or avoid using the litter box altogether.
When this happens, you can try to help her create new associations with the litter box by moving it to a different location or adding new litter boxes in other locations. You can even try to use a litter that is different from what your usual brand is to give her a different experience.

When there are multiple cats fighting over the litter box.
Multiple-cat owners must provide enough litter boxes in the household to prevent cats from fighting over which litter box to use. Try to designate resting areas and litter box areas for each cat in order to limit their interaction with each other, reducing stress and tension caused by litter box conflict.

Aside from these common litter box problems, it is very important to make sure that the litter is well-maintained and clean for your cat to use. Because cats can be picky when it comes to the smell and texture of the litter, it is best to use high-quality litter with odour control and anti-bacterial properties, along with low dust to keep cat allergies at bay.

Fifilitter ticks all those boxes with a safe and natural formulation that helps your cat pee and poop in comfort. It also forms hard clumps fast to make clean-up a breeze, and has low tracking to prevent dusty paw prints throughout the house. Truly a product that keeps both owners and pets healthy and happy!
