The Meaning Of Cat Behaviours

Feb 17, 2022

As fur parents, we want to know our pet better so that we know when it exhibits normal behavior and when it needs help. What are some cat behaviours that can be considered normal and what are behaviors that need your attention?

Here are some feline behaviors that you need to look out for and what these behaviours mean.

ESTRUS

When your cat looks restless, rolls around, rubs itself against anything and suddenly becomes too affectionate, it may mean that your cat is in heat or estrus. Although this signals that your cat is ready to mate and reproduce, it is also a challenging and distressing time for your cat. You can try to help relieve her of the discomfort by offering a warm towel to lay on or provide distraction to calm her down.

SPRAYING

Spraying, or marking their territory, is a usual instinct that most pets do. Cats mark their territories to claim an area as their own in order for them to feel safe in that area. They usually do this by urinating in their claimed area or rubbing their fur against your leg, furniture or even scratching surfaces.

ITCHING

Cats licking themselves is a usual feline behavior. But when your cat licks itself vigorously or scratches itself way too much, this is something that needs your immediate attention. It can be a sign of skin irritation, parasites or other health/skin concerns.

BITING

Biting is a manifestation of aggressive behavior that needs attention. When your cat bites, it means that your pet wants to show its power or even defend its territory. Try to observe if this becomes more frequent as you might need to consult a professional trainer to help you out.

CHEWING

Who doesn’t hate it when you see your favorite slippers or shoes being chewed on one morning?  When your cat chews on your stuff, it may mean that your cat needs more stimulation. Provide your cat with interactive and interesting objects to keep them busy throughout the day.

HIDING

Cats normally hide whenever they want some time for themselves. It is normal cat behavior as they can feel distressed or frazzled at one time or another. But if your cat hides for an unusually long time, it may mean that something is stressing your pet out. Try to figure out if there are changes to your cat’s routine or something that bothers it.

CHOKING

Choking, whether for people or animals, can really be a cause for panic. Although this is something that does not usually happen with cats, but in the event that it does, the best and only thing to do is to bring your cat to your vet at once! You may try to check out what is causing the blockage, but the safest thing to do is not remove it yourself, but have a professional do it.

HISSING

When your cat hisses at you, it is a sign of aggression or that your cat is afraid or anxious about something. Observe if your cat is hissing too much as this may mean that there is something bothering your cat and might need your help right away.

ROLLING

Don’t you just love it when your cat approaches you and starts to roll onto their back and on your feet? This is your pet’s way of telling you to drop everything you are doing and give it your undivided attention. It is your cat’s way to say that “Quality time starts now!”

LITTER BOX PROBLEMS

It is good to see your cat use its litter box for its pee-pee time.  It can also make you feel proud that you have trained it well. But if your cat starts to defecate in places other than its litter box, there might be something that is bothering your pet. Try to probe if there are changes to its routine that may be stressing your cat out or if there is something in the litter box that is causing the problem.
